The Datsun 520 and 521 models were produced during the mid-1960s and early 1970s. The 520 was initially produced from May 1965 until May 1968, and the 521 was a face-lifted version of the 520. Notably, the 420 designation was skipped due to its homophonic association with a Japanese word meaning "rudeness" or "impolite." The 520 initially featured two headlights on each side, which changed to quad headlights in 1967 and remained until the end of production. The 521 featured a flattened bonnet, front fenders, and a new grille design. Both models had various versions available, including single cab, long wheelbase single cab, double cab, and delivery van versions. The fender emblems indicated the engine fitment, with the 521 representing the first compact half-ton pickup truck sold in the American market in 1968. Additionally, the Datsun Cabstar was introduced in 1968 for larger load-carrying duties and shared a chassis with the third-generation Nissan Junior.
In February 1972, the Datsun 620 truck was released and was in production until 1979. It was a regular cab truck (a longer "King Cab" [Nissan's trademark for their extended cab trucks] version was released in 1977) and two wheelbases were offered, for a total of six different models.
n October 1979, Nissan introduced the Datsun 720 as successor to the 620. A four-door crew cab version of the 720 was available in most markets (although not in North America). In addition, some overseas models continued with the early style beds in the later model years as well as the lower cost round headlamps, and included various combinations of Datsun and Nissan badging while retaining the Datsun name throughout all model years
